Rockbund Art Museum (RAM)

Housed in a stunning 1932 Art Deco building that once served as the Royal Asiatic Society, RAM is the crown jewel of the Bund’s art scene. It is famous for its highly curated, experimental projects that often engage directly with the building’s historic architecture.

Long Museum (West Bund)

Founded by billionaire collectors Liu Yiqian and Wang Wei, this is the most ambitious private museum in China. The architecture is a masterpiece of industrial design, featuring a “vault-umbrella” structure built around a 1950s coal-hopper unloading site.

  • Focus: A massive range from traditional Chinese art and “Red Classics” to global superstars like Louise Bourgeois, James Turrell, and Antony Gormley.

 

ShanghART Gallery

Established in 1996, ShanghART is the pioneer of contemporary art in China. It was the first gallery from the mainland to participate in Art Basel and remains the most influential platform for the country’s most famous living artists.

  • Focus: The definitive roster of Chinese contemporary masters (e.g., Ding Yi, Yang Fudong) and vanguard multi-media works.

 

Power Station of Art (PSA)

As the first state-run museum dedicated to contemporary art in mainland China, PSA is located in a renovated power plant (complete with a 165-meter thermometer chimney). It is the permanent home of the prestigious Shanghai Biennale.

Perrotin Shanghai

The French powerhouse gallery occupies a massive space in the historic “Amber Building” near the Bund. It brings a high-fashion, high-energy atmosphere to the city, often serving as the bridge between the Parisian and Chinese art markets.

  • Focus: Pop-inflected international art and global icons such as Takashi Murakami, JR, and Daniel Arsham.

Shanghai Symphony Hall

Known affectionately as the “Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall,” this sleek, modern venue was designed by world-renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. It serves as the home of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), the oldest orchestra in Asia.

  • Focus: World-class orchestral performances, chamber music, and the prestigious Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition.


Shanghai Grand Theatre

Located at the northern edge of People’s Square, this “Crystal Palace” designed by Jean-Claude Charpentier is one of the world’s largest and best-equipped automatic stages. It is the premier venue for large-scale international touring productions.

  • Focus: Grand operas, touring Broadway musicals, international ballet companies and large-scale symphonic concerts.


Shanghai Oriental Art Center (SHOAC)

Designed by French architect Paul Andreu, the building resembles a five-petaled butterfly orchid from above. Located in Pudong, it houses one of the largest pipe organs in China and is a centerpiece for the city’s modern cultural life.

  • Address: 425 Dingxiang Road, Pudong New Area
  • Focus: International symphony orchestras, piano recitals, and contemporary Chinese theater.


Cadillac Shanghai Concert Hall

Built in 1930 and originally known as the Nanking Theatre, this is Shanghai’s oldest professional concert hall. In 2003, the entire 6,000-ton building was famously moved 66 meters to make way for city development while preserving its European Baroque interior.

  • Address: 523 East Yan’an Road, Huangpu District
  • Focus: Classical chamber music, jazz, folk, and “crossover” performances in an intimate, historic setting.


JZ Club

While smaller than the grand halls, JZ Club is the beating heart of Shanghai’s legendary jazz scene. It provides a sophisticated, red-velvet atmosphere reminiscent of old Shanghai, hosting both local masters and international jazz icons.

  • Focus: Authentic jazz, blues, and funk performances nightly.

    Shanghai Grand Theatre 


    An iconic “crystal palace” landmark in the heart of the city, this is Shanghai’s premier venue for high-end international tours and grand-scale productions. It features three distinct theaters under one roof.

    Shanghai International Dance Center (SIDC)

    Opened in 2016, this is China’s first professional theater complex dedicated exclusively to the art of dance. It is the permanent home of the Shanghai Ballet and the Shanghai Dance Theatre

    • Focus: Classical ballet, contemporary dance, and cutting-edge experimental choreography. It often hosts the “Shanghai International Ballet Competition.”

    • Focus: Broadway and West End musicals, modern dance, and large-scale original Chinese musical productions.

     

    Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre (SDAC)

    The heart of Shanghai’s experimental and contemporary theater scene. It is the primary venue for the annual “ACT Shanghai International Contemporary Theatre Festival.”
